KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — When it comes to bug hunts, there are times when no news is the best news. That’s the case with a grant acquired by the Kalamazoo County Health Department to test for the presence of the mosquito that carries the Zika virus.
They have been setting traps all summer and have not yet found any Asian tiger mosquitos in the County.
Zika is that mosquito-borne virus that caused a stir before the last Olympic games, and has resulted in the birth of hundreds of babies with Microcephaly in Central America and the Caribbean.
It has also appeared in several states in the southern U.S.
The Asian tiger mosquito doesn’t thrive in colder climates, but climate change has expanded the range of the Mosquito and the fear is that soon it will be here too.
