KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Township manager Dexter Mitchell has been charged with eavesdropping on a private board meeting last year.
Mitchell was charged Friday with installing a device to eavesdrop and released on a $500 personal recognizance bond. The charge stems from March 3, 2023, when he allegedly recorded a meeting of the township board.
Michigan State Police say surveillance video caught Mitchell placing a device underneath a table to record a closed-session attorney-client privileged meeting at the township hall.
Police reportedly later found the recording on a device at Mitchell’s home.
According to the Michigan State Police search warrant, Kalamazoo Township Supervisor Don Martin told state police that Mitchell had fired two fire officials and one other employee in the past six months, so Martin believed Mitchell thought the meeting was about him.
Mitchell is scheduled to be back in court February 27, 2024.
