KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After several hours of interviews it only took a few minutes Friday night for the Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education to name Carol McGlinn to a vacancy on the board.
McGlinn, a former school board member, was one of four finalists for the position.
After each was interviewed it only took one paper ballot and a few moments with no discussion for the board to select McGlinn, a former KPS Board of Education member who recently retired from SLD Read, a group that partners with the school district on teaching students how to read.
She will be sworn in and take her seat at the next board meeting February 22.
The other candidates were:
1) Jaqueline Slaby, a neighborhood activator for the City of Kalamazoo who told trustees she could help close the gap between town and gown in the community. She served on a school board in another community for six years.
2) Dr. Harriet Hale-Smith, a former administrator at Lake Michigan Community College who told trustees she had insights into the operations, having served as a substitute teacher in the district.
3) Pastor Ronnie Coleman, a retired Consumers Energy executive who spent 16 years on a school board in eastern Michigan, and also on the board of P.T.A. organizations.
They were chosen for interviews from a pool of 18 who applied.
McGlinn replaces Maricela Alcala, who was also an appointee, who only served about seven months on the board before resigning last month. Her term is set to expire at the end of 2024.
