KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – 2023 was a record breaking year for murders in Kalamazoo, but it appears that 2024 has gotten off to a better start so far.
It didn’t look like that on New Year’s Day when the one and only killing so far this year occurred just a few hours into 2024.
Public Safety Chief Dave Boysen says more officers have been assigned to do what they can with outreach and intervention programs, and beefed up enforcement, to getting guns off the street.
He says in the past two weekends, they have confiscated 16 guns and made 13 arrests for carrying without a permit, and other crimes, and twice that number since New Year’s.
He says the most dramatic decrease has been in the number of gun assaults.
Mayor Dave Anderson implored the community to continue to act as peacekeepers and council for calm when people they know sound like they may get violent, which may be tougher this year because of the state of national politics.
Boysen made his presentation to city commissioners Monday night.
