SHELBYVILLE (WKZO AM/FM) — Allegan County Deputies investigating a fatal wrong way crash on U.S. -131 near Shelbyville say that 29-year-old Sean Barone may have been drinking prior to the crash early Sunday.
He died from injuries he suffered when his car slammed head-on into a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Alexander Wieland of Plainwell.
He had taken the wrong ramp and was headed north in the southbound lanes. Several other cars were able to swerve around him, but Wieland could not.
Wieland suffered a concussion and a severe leg injury and is recovering. He had to be pulled from his car as a fire burned in the engine compartment.
Investigators say both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
