LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for lawmakers to pass legislation to make community college tuition free for any high school graduate in the state regardless of their age.
She called for that in her 2024 State of the State address before a joint session of the House and Senate.
She also called for more housing to be built and rehabbed.
The Senate remains controlled by Democrats, but the state House is currently evenly split, 54-54, between Democrats and Republicans until special elections are held in April to fill two seats.
Those seats are in suburban Detroit and were represented by Democrats who won their city’s mayoral races last November.
