KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The recent subzero weather has once again raised concerns about the safety of Kalamazoo’s unhoused population. The city’s annual “Point in Time” head count of the homeless is scheduled for tonight. It’s required by the federal government to qualify for funding.
Commissioner Don Cooney says the city has already made low income housing a priority but he recently talked to an expert who thinks the city could do more, including creation of a municipal non-religious shelter.
Dozens of volunteers will be visiting shelters, looking under bridges and touring other encampment sites well into the night, to get that headcount.
