KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A search with numerous divers over the weekend failed to find the body of the man who vanished into the Kalamazoo River last week after running away from officers.
The Kalamazoo County Emergency Management office coordinated with Morrow Dam operators to decrease the flow of the river Saturday to reduce the depth and current of the river so divers could look for the man. He vanished after officers tried to pull him over January 1 in the area of Michigan Avenue and Rose Street for a motorcycle license plate violation.
The motorcyclist then fled from police, with the man abandoning his cycle in the area of Harrison Street and East Michigan Avenue, heading through Veteran’s Memorial Park. That’s where he entered the water. He initially tried to swim across, but then stopped mid-river and appeared to be struggling.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers then saw him go under the water, and they never saw him come back up.
The man’s name has not been released.
