KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo city commissioners could be getting a 10% raise in pay.
The Local Officers Compensation Committee, an independent body, says members of the commission deserve at least a cost-of-living bump.
They haven’t gotten an increase since 2021 and we all know what inflation has done since then.
They are recommending the mayor get about $1150 more to just over $12,000 a year and the vice mayor get a raise of $970 to $10,170 annually.
The five commissioners would get about $850 more, to bring their annual salary up to $9000.
The increases match the Consumer Price Index over the last two years of 10.55% and put Kalamazoo in line with what Michigan’s other middle cities pay their boards, just a little more than Battle Creek and a little less than Portage. City board salaries range from $27,000 in Ann Arbor and $32,000 in Grand Rapids to just $2,000 a year in Royal Oak.
The commission will receive the report this evening. Under the state’s LOCC rules, if they do not reject the recommendation, the raises will take effect automatically.
