LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — A man wanted for murder in Alabama has been taken into custody in Van Buren Country after a shootout with police along Intersate 94.
Michigan State Police and a Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputy teamed up for a felony stop around 5:20 p.m. Friday because the truck he was driving had been reported stolen in Alabama.
MSP Lt. Dale Hinz said the driver jumped out of the truck and began shooting at them. Officers immediately returned fire.
When the gunman ran out of bullets, he surrendered. No one was struck with gunfire.
It was only when they did a background check that they realized the suspect, Landon Harbin, was wanted for the shooting death of his mother, 54-year old Jana Harbin, who was found deceased Wednesday in her home in Meridianville, Ala.
Harbin will be held in the Van Buren County Jail until extradition hearings can be held to send him back to Alabama.
