KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools put a lot of stock in providing mentors to help students who are struggling, and they are always looking for more volunteers to serve as mentors.
Its another piece in the puzzle. Another tool to help get more students Promise-ready who might not otherwise have the influences in their lives to facilitate that possibility.
Supt. Michael Rice says they had 421 mentors helping nearly 1,700 students get better grades and live better lives last year. He hopes to expand that this year to over 2,000 students.
They initially focused on minority males who have faced the steepest hurdles, but Rice said he also eventually wants to expand that to include any student who could benefit from adult guidance.
Anyone who would like to volunteer can call the administration building at (269) 337-0123.
