PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A tutoring program to help homeless students has been launched by Portage Public Schools as the number of them has risen from 92 in 2017 to 146 now.
The district’s coordinator of instructional services Janet Johnstone says most are in an unstable situation, living with a friend or a relative as the area has a lack of affordable housing and the eviction moratorium put in place during COVID-19 has expired.
She says some don’t even realize their classmates have a different experience than them.
Students from elementary through high school are involved in the program
