LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo County man who is serving life for a double-murder he claims he did not commit, may have to take his appeals to federal court, because the Michigan Supreme Court has declined to hear his case.
In 1990 Doug Estes and Jim Bennett were shot to death while they were hunting in the Fulton State Game Area next to property owned by Jeff Titus, who was not charged at the time because he had an alibi.
Titus was convicted 12 years later when the case was reviewed by a Cold Case team.
Atty. David Moran with the Michigan Innocence Clinic claims that his lawyer failed to interview the investigators who initially cleared him and missed key evidence that may have resulted in a not guilty verdict.
But the appeals court rejected their claim of incompetent defense, and for now that’s where the case stands.
