KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Are you ready for some startling numbers?
There are 560 students in Kalamazoo Public Schools that are identified as homeless, about one in 22, but the actual number may be much higher.
Robin Greymountain, who is the district’s Homeless Liaison says if national statistics are correct, many would rather keep it a secret.
She says she has school officials in every building looking for signs that might indicate a student is homeless, like hunger or sleepiness.
Greymountain says its important they come forward because homeless students have rights, and they also have a number of services available that can help them get to graduation.
She says her office has resources to help any student that is homeless get the basic services and resources to stay in school and thrive.
She says every child who is homeless is a child living in trauma, one that may affect them for the rest of their lives.
It is something that trustees say we need to be more mindful of, especially in this season of giving.
