KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Tuesday, WOOD TV reported that COVID-19 tests for Western Michigan University (WMU) football players are on the increase.
The tests are being done ahead of games scheduled this fall, which were reinstated through the Mid-American Conference (MAC) after the return of Big Ten football.
Assistant Athletic Director Brian Bauer told WOOD TV that new WMU protocol requires increased testing, besides wearing masks and social distancing measures. He said football players and their associated staff have to get tested about four times a week under that protocol.
He added that the use of rapid antigen testing has become more widely available, which should be enough to mitigate risk. The Sindecuse Health Center will be managing the tests, and any positives will have an additional one. That test will then be sent to a facility in Detroit to make sure it’s accurate.
According to the 2020 WMU football schedule, WMU is set to face off against the University of Akron on November 4 at 6 p.m.
