LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Two new bills will be debated by a House Committee Tuesday morning that would stiffen penalties for not keeping your distance when driving by emergency responders doing their job.
Municipal Attorney Roxanne Seeber says one bill would increase failing to yield and injuring a first responder to a 2-year felony with a thousand dollar fine.
Failing to yield causing death would be a 15-year-felony and $7500 fine.
She says it’s a cause that is “near and dear to their hearts” because of the on-duty death of Comstock Fire Chief Ed Switalski.
She told the Kalamazoo Township Board Monday night the bills will be considered by the House Committee on Law and Justice.
