KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Abortion was on the national agenda on election day in several states and Wednesday night it became a point of contention at the Kalamazoo County board meeting.
Opponents to funding a YWCA program that provides reproductive healthcare to the poor, expressed their anger that it ended up in the budget, despite public opposition.
They claimed the money was taken from veterans, and that a conflict exists on the board.
But county council Angelina Barnes reviewed Tami Ray’s status and found no conflict, under state law.
And County Administrator Kevin Catlin says the funding was not committed to vets.
YWCA spokesperson Adrienne Zaya says county funding will not be used for abortions, but will help people with services they could not afford otherwise.
The funding provision was approved on a 6-to-3 vote as part of final budget deliberations last month.
