EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State University will eliminate men’s and women’s swimming and diving after the 2020-21 season.
According to officials, the move comes as MSU faces a revenue shortfall that could be over $30 million due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier this year, the athletic department announced other cost saving measures, including salary reductions and department furloughs.
School officials also said that there are no plans to cut other sports teams in the foreseeable future.
Michigan State two-sport All-American Tom Yewcic has died. Yewcic was a quarterback and punter for the football team and a catcher with the baseball team. In 1953, he became the only player in college sports to win a Rose Bowl and be named the Most Valuable Player in the College World Series.
He was a catcher for the Detroit Tigers in 1957 and then played for the Boston Patriots in the American Football League from 1961-66.
Tom Yewcic was 88-years-old.
