KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It won’t impact next month’s local election, but beginning next year it will be easier than ever to vote in state and federal elections in Michigan. Voters a year ago approved reforms that call for early voting, drop-boxes, easier absentee voting, and ballot tracking. It may make it easier for voters, but it’s a lot more work and expense for the public officials who run elections. That’s why Kalamazoo County Clerk Meredith Place proposed that the 19 township and city clerks collaborate. It was just announced that 18 of them have now agreed to the arrangement.
Place says the new state rules require that early polling stations open nine days before election day.
Portage City Clerk Erica Eklov says there are four tentative locations.
It will make Michigan a leader in voter reform.
The first application of the new voter rules will be for next year’s Democratic Presidential Primary, which has been tentatively set for February 27th. Only Pavilion Township will try to meet the new requirements on their own.
