KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Should Kalamazoo County’s new Justice Center get a new name?
The Kalamazoo County Bar Association has proposed that it be called the Judge Charles A. Pratt Justice Center, to honor the first African American judge in Kalamazoo County, but the request may have come a little late, according to County Administrator Kevin Catlin.
Catlin he says all the signs, both inside and outside, have already been ordered and changing them all could be quite expensive. He says the county might consider a smaller, more affordable tribute like a plaque or a public artwork.
The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday asked to see cost estimates before making a decision.
Some oppose the idea, some support it, and some are leaning toward a smaller honorarium.
Judge Pratt served 12 years after he was elected to the court in 1968, and was also the first African-American Chief Judge in Kalamazoo County. He died in 1989 and is buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
