MATTAWAN (WKZO AM/FM) — A Mattawan Police Officer and the suspected car thief, who was the target of her gun fire, are both claiming self-defense. Both have been charged and both could be convicted.
Chelsey Omilian is off the force and charged with reckless use of a Firearm. She allegedly fired five shots at a car that had been reported stolen by Gary Kingsbury and claims it moved toward her in a threatening manner.
Kingsbury is apparently claiming he fled because bullets were slamming into the back of the car, wounding a backseat passenger in the leg. He claims he had permission to use the car.
Mattawan Police Chief Scott Herbert backed Omilian’s claim in a written statement.
State Police Lt. Chuck Christian says they reviewed the dashcam video but refused to go into any detail about what the investigation revealed. It will be up to the courts to sort it out.
Kingsbury is charged with two counts of unlawfully driving away a vehicle and resisting.
Neither of the females who were in the car with Kingsbury have been charged and the wounded woman is recovering.
