KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The building boom in Kalamazoo just got a new player.
Plans for major construction in downtown Kalamazoo are moving forward with new County facilities, and construction on the Exchange.
Now WMU has announced plans to complement that construction, with some new buildings of their own.
They hope to add a new Student Center and modern housing in south campus along the newly designated Ring Road South, which parallels Stadium Drive where Elmwood Apartments are currenty located.
University spokesperson Cheryl Rolland says those structures are 60 to 70-years-old and need replacing.
She says they had planned to replace the Valley Dorms next, but new President Ed Montgomery decided to move first on this project, which will tie in to all the new construction going on in Downtown Kalamazoo.
It’s the most visible view of campus and right now it’s not the most flattering picture.
The goal is to open the housing by 2020 and the new Student Center the year after.
