KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County has special millages to provide funding for senior citizen services, for law enforcement, and to create more affordable housing. Now veterans groups say they are hoping voters will add one for them.
Michael Fry, Chair of the Kalamazoo County Veterans Affairs Committee says the money they receive now just isn’t adequate to provide the services they have available. He says in 2021 they ran out of money after five months, and last year it took only three months to expend all their funds.
He says they provide counseling to help vets navigate the paperwork required by the Veterans Administration, as well as provide local emergency aid. That includes food, housing, utilities, dental, hearing, and optical assistance.
They are asking for a yes vote this November on a request for .1 mills, which they say will equate to about $10 a year on the average tax bill.
There are about 12,000 veterans in Kalamazoo County who would be eligible for their assistance.
