KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public School’s new Superintendent says making sure kids are in class when they are supposed to be will be one of his priorities.
Dr. Darrin Slade says he wants parents who haven’t enrolled their children yet to get it done, so their children can be there on the first day of school, which is August 28.
Dr. Slade says too many don’t get signed up in time and miss classes, which leaves the kids starting out behind.
He says students can’t learn if they are not in class. And if they are in school, they aren’t out causing problems in the community. He told the Board of Education Thursday night that he recently learned from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety that many who get arrested for crimes should actually have been in school.
Dr. Slade says he will also be increasing efforts to end truancy, paying attention to students with a high number of absentees, and sending out staff to look for those children who disappeared during the pandemic. He says that means getting aggressive with parents and student by pursuing legal remedies.
Beginning Monday, August 14, parents can enroll their children at the KPS Administration Building on Howard Street, or at their student’s school from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
