KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Remember the one-lane pilot program for Kalamazoo’s Winchell Avenue to allow cars share one lane of traffic to make way for bikers? Well that plan, which was announced in mid-July, will no longer be according to the city of Kalamazoo.
City Officials made the decision not to move forward on the plan after receiving feedback on the project.
” We recognize and appreciate that many had concerns about this new type of street,” said Kalamazoo Public Services Director James Baker. “And we want everyone to feel safe and comfortable when using Winchell Avenue,.”
The city also announced on Monday, August 7, that plans are in the works to install a more conventional layout for both cars and bikes.
Parking spaces on the south side of Winchell Avenue near Asylum Park Preserve are planned according to officials along with the south bike lane that is expected to merge into a “sharrow,” or a shared bike and car lane.
