BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) — We now know the name of a woman who died in a fire in a two story home at 12 First Street in Battle Creek.
Bernice Taylor was not able to escape the smoke and flames. Her son Leon Taylor was rescued but not before suffering burns. A third person in the home escaped with minor injuries.
Lt. Quincy Jones says they plan to investigate the cause of the fire Friday.
They believe the fire began in one of the upstairs bedrooms but do not know the cause.
Crews called out at 5:30 a.m. on New Years Day found smoke and flames pouring from the second story of the home.
They say the home suffered over 45-thousand dollars damage to the structure and contents and is a total loss.
