LANSING (WKZO) — Lab tests say that the flu shots available this fall will be effective in blocking the H3N2 virus only a third of the time, but may may reduce the severity of the symptoms if you do catch the bug.
Jennifer Smith with the Michigan Dept. of Community health says right now the flu season is spiking in Michigan..about a month earlier than expected and may not have peaked yet.
Some Michigan Hospitals are already seeing twice as many cases this year as they have in previous years.
But Smith says there have been no pediatric deaths so far in the state, and that’s the real measure they look at.
There have been 15 such deaths nationwide.
They are still urging people to get a flu shot because even if it isn’t 100%, it affords alot more protection than going without.
