KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Officials with The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo say they are “deeply saddened and disheartened” by vandalism on their recently refurbished basketball court at 1700 South Burdick Street last night.
The rims were ripped off the backboards and stolen.
Major Ronnie Amick of The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo said, “We are devastated to see the result of such senseless vandalism. The refurbishment of this basketball court was a labor of love for our community, and it is heart-wrenching to witness the destruction of something we had hoped would be a source of joy and unity.”
Amick says they are determined to rebuild the basketball court, but the financial burden of replacing the stolen rims is significant, and they are appealing to the community monetary contributions.
The Salvation Army says thousands of people throughout Kalamazoo County and surrounding areas receive assistance each year through an array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, financial relief for rent and utilities, long term social services programs, outreach to the elderly, and opportunities for underprivileged children.
