KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — The students at Washington Writers Academy, a Kalamazoo Public Elementary magnet school in the Edison neighborhood have a new school, beginning this week.
They have been attending classes at a former Christian school on South Westnedge for the last year and a half while construction crews tore down their old elementary and built a brand new one in the same location.
Some of the architectural elements of the old school have been built into the new one, and a relatively new gym built in 2003 was also saved.
The $10.7-million cost of the project was funded with voter approved bonds.
It’s the third new school the district has built in the last few years. The bond issue and the voters provided the funding, “The Promise” created the need.
