KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A man charged with hitting and paralyzing a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer back in August of last year has been sentenced.
31-year-old Deymeon Todd was to one year in jail and three years probation on Monday for hitting officer Todd Maher who was riding his motorcycle on Saturday, August 22.
Court records from the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office indicated that Todd was on his way home from Deja Vu strip club when he crashed into officer Maher who was on his way to work around 6 a.m. that morning. Those records also show that Todd was charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
The preliminary breath test found a blood alcohol content of 0.85, just above the legal limit, but according to court records, Todd’s blood test indicated a BAC of .091.
Todd also admitted to drinking and smoking a blunt at the scene of the crash.
Maher’s family said that the officer, who joined KDPS in August of 2006, had to have his left leg amputated as a result of the accident.
