LANSING, MI — Michigan’s attorney general is taking over the local case against the man accused of killing two-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith. A-G Dana Nessel yesterday said she is taking the cases from both Ingham County and Macomb County.
The suspect in Wynter’s death, Rashad Trice, is looking at charges in both counties. Investigators say he kidnapped Wynter last week, then strangled her with a phone cord. Federal prosecutors say he sent text messages to the little girl’s mom telling her that Wynter was ‘gone.’
The A-G’s office says her decision to take over the case won’t impact the federal case that could end with Trice on death row.
