KALAMAZOO COUNTY (WKZO) — Friday’s 193-car pileup in Kalamazoo County was the largest chain reaction collision involving a white out and icy pavement conditions ever recorded, according to Wikipedia. There have been seven larger mass collisions but they all occurred in fog.
9-1-1 calls from the victims give you an idea of what it was like to be there. The one thing you notice from the videos showing semis and cars slamming into the wrecks is there are no screeching brakes. The drivers are sliding on ice and there is nothing they can do to stop.
State Police have brought in accident reconstructionists from all over the state, using a computer program, to figure out what happened, and the role each vehicle played in that record breakingcrash.
Lt. Dale Hinz confirms they have identified the drivers involved in the initial accidents that began it all.He says its too early if they will pursue prosecution.
