KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As the search continues for a missing Portage woman who is presumed dead, new federal court filings suggest a connection between Heather Kelley’s presumed killing, and her boyfriend’s alleged escape from a Kalamazoo halfway house.
Kelley’s burnt out car was found near East Michigan Avenue and North Sprinkle Road last December. Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says her blood, hair, and other signs of violence were found inside the vehicle.
Her boyfriend, Carlos Watts Jr. reportedly cut his GPS tether at the Kalamazoo Probation Enchantment Program and ran away December 12, just hours after being questioned by police about Kelley’s disappearance.
According to WWMT-TV, in the trial brief for his federal indictment for felony escape, prosecutors say that they believe he ran away because he “thought” he was a suspect in Kelley’s murder.
According to the television station, Watts Jr. told police he ran, because he was scared that Kelley’s brother was going to kill him, sending death threats, including a picture of an AR-15 assault rifle, according federal court documents.
They say if Watts Jr. makes that claim during felony trial, Kalamazoo County prosecutors will then present DNA evidence, GPS information, and Watts Jr.’s own statement to police as evidence that he “is somehow involved” in Kelley’s disappearance or murder.
