WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO) — Congressman Fred Upton says a stretch of highway just east of Kalamazoo might not have become a disaster area a week ago today, if the highway had been 6 lanes instead of four.
It’s an opinion that MDOT officials don’t necessarily agree with, but it’s prompted State Senator Margaret O’ Brien to request a safety review.
State Police say they have a good idea what happened. Lt. Dale Hinz says it began when a semi rear-ended a slower moving van in a whiteout in the Eastbound lanes. They assume it was gawkers who triggered the westbound pileup.
Upton calls that stretch of the highway, the “Bermuda Triangle” of Kalamazoo County.
He says a widened interstate from Kalamazoo to I-69 should be done not just for safety sake, but to promote business and commerce.
He says passage of the road funding bill in May could be the first step to getting that fixed.
