KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Officials from Kalamazoo Central High School, the Kalamazoo Public Schools District, along with Derek Jeter’s Turn-2 Foundation President and contractors broke ground on what will be the new Derek Jeter Field at Kalamazoo Central High School on Wednesday, June 21.
The Yankee Shortstop’s Turn-2 Foundation contributed $5-million to completely rebuild the baseball and softball complex.
Foundation President Sharlee Jeter, who helped break ground, said she had fond memories of the place, seeing as they lived right next door.
Quite a bit of ground has already been broken, as all traces of the old diamonds have already removed with plans calling for the replacement of everything to include laying down artificial turf. The plans also call for the reconfiguration of the diamonds to face the northeast. Junior Softball team catcher London Rabb says she’ll especially like that feature.
Devin Webster, who will be a senior on the team this coming season, says he has been waiting for this for a long time.
The project was first suggested 8 years ago, and was delayed by the pandemic and the rise in construction prices. The goal is to get the reconstruction done this summer.
