KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Multiple agencies responded to Monday’s two-vehicle crash in in Kalamazoo County that caused a propane fuel delivery truck to tip over on it’s side and spill fuel out onto the roadway.
Among the agencies was the Battle Creek Fire Department Hazmat Team, that was on scene for 13 hours.
Kalamazoo County authorities say the crash happened around 10:45 a.m. on North Riverview Drive between B Avenue and C Avenue in Cooper Township when a woman driving a Chevrolet Equinox crossed the center line and crashed head on into the truck carrying propane. The crash caused the truck to tip over on it’s side, spilling a considerable amount of fuel onto the roadway causing an odor of propane in the nearby area.
According to firefighters, the driver of the Equinox was taken to the hospital with minor injuries while the driver of the tanker was not hurt.
Authorities say the truck was carrying around 1,600 gallons of liquid propane when it was struck by the driver who crossed over the center line and that 10 to 15 homes were evacuated.
The BCFD Hazmat team, which has been recognized by the state as a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) response unit, took command of the hazmat scene, mitigated the incident, performed the method of flaring to safely offload the propane, and monitored all surrounding atmospheric conditions.
The team collaborated with Kalamazoo County partners to ensure the safety of all residents and responders on the scene who worked together to reopen that section of North Riverview Drive early Tuesday morning.
