Graphic Packaging, City of Kalamazoo, and elected officials named in lawsuit that alleges environmental racism, and even one death, because of pollution

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A class action lawsuit has been filed today seeking civil damages and compensation because of the pollution coming from Graphic Packaging International and the City of Kalamazoo’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The suit charges the city and the company not only with toxic releases, but the State of Michigan and the federal government for a century old pattern of environmental racism, due to the location of the plants next to the predominantly black Northside Neighborhood.

33 plaintiffs are listed on the filing, but it says 8,000 residents have been victimized.

The suit names Graphic Packaging International, the City of Kalamazoo, Mayor David Anderson, City Manager Jim Ritsema, Utilities Director James Baker, former City Commission members Bobby Hopewell and Jack Urban, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and other state officials like State Senator Seann McCann.

The suit also alleges that 17 year old Laprace Stegall died of an asthma attack that may have been triggered by emissions in 2017. Her estate is named as one of the plaintiffs.

In reaction to the Lawsuit, Kalamazoo City Spokesman Mike Smith says they do not comment on pending Litigation, which is similar to what Graphics Packaging said in their written statement.

The company went on to say, ” As a general matter, we will defend ourselves against any false and misleading claims. We are proud of our work and our record in Kalamazoo and take very seriously our responsibility as a good neighbor, community partner and employer to 750 people at our Kalamazoo mill.”
