WYOMING (WKZO) — A Wyoming Police Officer and a local man were both hospitalized after a shootout in the 200 block of Himes in the Kent County Community.
The officer was reportedly sent home after treatment. The gunman remains hospitalized in serioius condition with a chest wound and under 24-hour guard.
Officers responded to a domestic dispute at about 3:45 Thursday afternoon and immediately found themselves in an armed stand-off with a man in his 30’s. The woman involved in the dispute managed to get out of the house and was talking with officers.
Without warning, Chief James Carmody says the suspect stepped out of the back of his house with multiple weapons and started shooting at officers.
Carmody told reporters that his officer was hit just below his Kevlar vest near his belt buckle. Despite his wound, the officer was able to return fire.
The suspect ran through the neighborhood, firing his guns at officers as he ran.
Other officers were able to corner and shoot the suspect.
A resident in the area reportedly suffered minor injuries from a stray bullet.
Multiple police agencies responded to the gunfight, including the State Police.
Investigations are underway.
