KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The three finalists to become the next superintendent for the Kalamazoo Public Schools got a second grilling from the Board of Education last night.
The first round focused on general educational issues. Last night’s round targeted challenges in Kalamazoo schools, like low graduation rates and reading scores, equity, violence, and parental involvement.
The candidates were asked point blank what makes them think they would be a good fit here.
Dearborn Heights Superintendent Dr. Ty Weeks says he feels he has been training his entire career for this job.
Chicago Public Schools Special Education Administrator Dr. Stephanie Jones said this is the town with “The Promise”.
Dr. Darrin Slade, an assistant superintendent in Missouri, said he drove around town and was very impressed, especially when he learned Derek Jeter played baseball in Kalamazoo.
Each presented their credentials and experiences in areas where the district needs help. They each had very different personalities during the interviews, which ran overtime.
Board of Education members Tandy Moore and Patti Stoller-Barber encouraged everyone who watched the interviews to give their opinions on the online links, which close at 12 noon Tuesday.
The candidates will be touring the district and holding sessions with staff and parents today. The Board of Education will meet Thursday at 6:00 p.m. to make a final decision.
