KALAMAZOO (WKZO)– This week’s heavy snowfall can prove to be doubly dangerous if you are older or infirm and try to shovel your driveway.
Dr. Scott Davidson, a trauma surgeon at Bronson Hospital says it’s not only the strain on your muscles.
Temperatures this cold also present a challenge to your heart and lungs. He says anyone over 40-who is thinking about digging out their driveway should check with their doctor first.
He says as many heart attacks as they see this time of the year, they see many more injuries from accidental falls.
It’s important to pace yourself and warm up before you start shoveling. Use your knees and not your back and stay hydrated, because cold air is dry air.
