KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners are not expected to take up the Southtown Design Review District question, until their February 16th regular meeting, after the initial date had to be delayed because of the Super Bowl Sunday’s heavy snowfall.
No reason for the decision to delay the vote was given.
City planners hope to establish guidelines like the ones downtown, that will both encourage and regulate new construction and development in the area to prevent structures that just don’t fit in from being built.
Opponents, mostly residents, felt they were too restrictive. But supporters say the guidelines will make the district easier on the eye and more pedestrian friendly with walkways, and other amenities.
The opening of the new Medical School and the construction of a new KVCC Campus next to Bronson Methodist, means development is coming.
