KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Shootings have dominated the national news for the last few days. Today is the 12th anniversary of the shooting death of Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officer Eric Zapata.
Zapata was responding to a call in the Milwood Neighborhood about a man, who was apparently drunk and had been playing violent video games, grabbed one of his father’s unsecured guns and shot Zapata.
Public Safety Chief David Boysen remembers the effect Zapata’s death had on his family and the community.
Boysen says everyone who was in the department at the time will never forget it.
The gunman in that crime shot and killed himself rather than be arrested.
