PAW PAW (WKZO) — The State Police investigation into the state’s largest traffic accident, the big pile-up on I-94 last month has ended and they are ready to take it to the next phase.
A team of accident investigators recreated the crash, vehicle by vehicle using photos, interviews and other data.
State Police Lieutenant Dale Hinz says they may wind up issuing multiple tickets for driving too fast for conditions. He doubts they would seek criminal charges, despite the fact that one man was killed and 20 people were hospitalized because of the crash.
He says drivers should have slowed down when they drove into a white out at the 88 mile marker.
He says they plan to meet with the Kalamazoo County’s Prosecutor this week to go over their findings. It is ultimately the Prosecutor’s call on charges.
Lt. Hinz says in his opinion the most serious charges may be filed against the drivers who had suspended licenses and unregistered and uninsured cars at the time of the crash.
Those people may face the most serious prosecution.
