ALLENDALE (WKZO) — 40-years-ago mislabeled fire retardant was shipped to a cattle feed producer and within months, millions of Michiganders were contaminated by PBB, ingested from beef and milk.
It’s still called one of the worst agricultural catastrophes in U.S. History, and suspected of causing health problems to this day.
It’s a sensitive issue and may have happened again, this time with a better result.
It’s been revealed that a toxic biofuel called Lascadoil was allegedly mislabeled as Soy oil food supplement at an Ohio firm, triggering a voluntary recall.
The error appears to have killed 50-thousand turkeys at four farms owned by the Seitsema Family in West Michigan last August.
The USDA cites the Seitsema family and State Agriculture officials for their quick action in making sure that none of the birds reached the market this time.
The matter remains under investigation to determine what happened so it can be avoided in the future.
