COMSTOCK (WKZO) — Morrow Lake, already on the edge of the largest release of crude oil in U.S. History, is now also the site of the largest release of Asbestos in Michigan since the substance was declared a hazardous material over 40-years ago.
U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles has obtained guilty pleas from a trio who failed to properly remove Asbestos from the old Consumers Power generating station at the Morrow Dam.
Long term exposure to asbestos fibers cause a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma,.
Cory Hammond, Luanne Brie and Robert White were salvaging equipment and scrap from the old power station.
They failed to notify federal officials that Asbestos was present and failed to properly remove it, resulting in a million dollar emergency cleanup by the EPA.
They could get up to four years in prison and will likely be required to reimburse the EPA for the cost of the cleanup.
