KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A television station in Kalamazoo was the subject of a bomb threat Thursday afternoon, April 13.
According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the CBS affiliate station, WWMT News Channel 3 at 590 West Maple Street had to be evacuated around 2:30 p.m. when a man who claimed to be armed with a bomb inside a backpack entered the station’s main lobby.
Evening anchor Andy Dominianni said that News Channel 3’s chief engineer was the first one to make contact with the suspect who first called down to the news department with a complex news tip and wanted to speak to a reporter about it. When the engineer nudged the front door open to better hear the man, the suspect shoved his way into the front lobby and allegedly made the bomb threat.
Acting quickly, the engineer was able to lock the door behind him to secure the man in the lobby, run around outside to the back of the building, and get the station’s employees out of the building within minutes.
Multiple agencies responded to include KDPS K9 officers.
After two hours of negotiations via telephone, the suspect ultimately surrendered to police when officers brought him food to eat.
Police arrested the man without further incident.
No injuries were reported.
