KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Early voting has already begun for the May 2nd election with only one item appearing on the ballot in Kalamazoo County. And that item is the renewal of the countywide school funding enhancement millage. The measure so far has passed by comfortable margins every time it appeared on the ballot, but that was before the pandemic. According to Kalamazoo Public Schools Interim Superintendent Cindy Green, this is not a new tax and won’t increase anyone’s tax bills.
Every school district in the county now relies on the income from that millage to cover the costs of educating students. It was first introduced because The State of Michigan has been underfunding its Public Schools for decades, so say Kalamazoo School Trustees.
And because of this, trustees are hoping the public at large will vote yes on the measure on May 2nd, especially with how unpredictable elections can be nowadays between the pandemic, conservative attacks, and the general lack of trust in government institutions.
