KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo City Commissioners are expected to make their final choice for a new City Attorney tonight.
A couple of commissioners were ready to make their pick immediately after interviews a week and a half ago, but after citizen requests for a chance for input, most commissioners decided to give them that chance tonight.
The City has a tight deadline, because current City Attorney Clyde Robinson will be leaving the post June 2.
Human Resources Director Shelly Dusek says they will need time for contract negotiations, and the chosen candidate will have to give their current employer notice. She says the background checks alone will take four to six weeks to complete.
The candidates are Aaron Leal, the current City Attorney in Royal Oak, Lewis Smith and Ivar Stein who both work in governmental positions in Detroit.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. Picking the new attorney is the last item on the agenda.
