KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Get ready for more roadwork in Kalamazoo. Starting Monday, April 3, a project to improve West Michigan Avenue between Lovell Street and West Main Street is scheduled to begin.
According to Kalamazoo city officials, the project will pick up where the 2022 Stadium Drive reconstruction project left off at Lovell Street and continue to approximately 150 feet north of the Academy Street intersection.
Work will include surfacing, milling, and repaving with new asphalt, with curb and gutter replacement as needed along with new pavement markings. Officials also say the project will also include several pedestrian enhancements such as sidewalk repairs, curb ramp construction, and new pedestrian crossing signs.
A button-activated flashing pedestrian sign will be installed at Academy Street to increase visibility of pedestrians using the crosswalk.
The street will remain open throughout the project with lane closures as needed. Drivers should anticipate delays and consider alternate routes when possible. Construction is scheduled to be completed by July.
The $791,146 project is funded through the 2019 jurisdictional transfer agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
According to the city, work will continue east on Michigan Avenue through downtown later this year. A preventative maintenance project will repair and seal the surface of the street and reconfigure the lane markings to maintain it until it is converted to two-way in 2026 – 2028.
