KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — The Old Douglas Avenue Fire Station will apparently have new life as a community center. That’s called getting “repurposed” these days.
The city stopped using the station because it simply wasn’t built for modern fire trucks. Now several neighborhood groups hope to use it for office space and programs.
Max Tibbets with the Stuart Neighborhood Association says a $50-thousand grant from Federal neighborhood funding will be supplemented with other grants and sweat-equity to bring the building into a usable condition.
He says they hope it will become a regular home for recreational programs, a community meeting space and a location to get neighborhood services.
